Milk (2008)

★★★★

What a role for Sean Penn. I knew nothing of Harvey Milk prior to seeing the movie, so I learned a lot. ("Hope" is a political message for everyone!) I left with a few questions (Why weren't gay women more active in this movement in the 1970's?), but then had to remind myself that the movie isn't actually a documentary. One scene towards the end is annoying because it doesn't give the audience enough credit; it's an earlier scene replayed in case the viewers don't make the connection themselves. Anyway, the movie left me inspired by Milk's activism and leadership, and saddened for the tragic loss of his life.
